Whampoa Blues - Max Mok Siu-chung (1990) - Rennie's Mill, Tiu Keng Leng

We interrupt normal broadcasting for a quick interlude into an older film from 1990. Whampoa Blues tells the story of a couple of young villagers from the Nationalist/Kuomintang stronghold of Rennie's Mill that was located on the west side of Junk Bay. It was basically a shanty town filled with the ex-soldiers of the Nationalist Army who had sought refuge in Hong Kong following the retreat of the Nationalist Government to Taiwan in 1949. It remained a Nationalist stronghold right up until its demolition in the mid-90s when the town was razed and the hillside behind it was excavated and the sea in front reclaimed to create the modern day residential area, Tiu Keng Leng. It wouldn't surprise me if the backfill from the excavation was used for the sea reclamation.

Anyway, in the film, the two protagonists have applied to and been accepted into the Whampoa Military Academy in Kaohsiung (basically, it's Taiwan's version of Sandhurst or West Point). Most of the film was shot there but the opening scenes were filmed in Hong Kong in and around Rennie's Mill.

I know, it's only a single post film, but sometimes a single post can contain a lot of history (see this single one as well).
