Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Ngong Ping Village, Lantau Island

In the last post from Strangers (well, there are a couple of key locations that I haven't been able to find yet), the final Hong Kong scene in the last episode (Episode 8) was filmed at Ngong Ping village on Lantau. Obviously the first image is part of the Po Lin Monastery complex. The second image is where the scene was shot and is a small ornamental circular viewing point near to the cable car station.

Another establishing shot that is worth including is the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island. It's always an impressive sight no matter how long you have been in Hong Kong.

Battleship - Taylor Kitsch (2012) - Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau...or not?

As the crashed spaceship heads into Earth's atmosphere it plummets towards Hong Kong and, on the way, passes the famous big Buddha on Lantau Island. The thing is the film makers decided that this shot would only work if they superimposed the Buddha on to Hong Kong Island instead. So, what we end up with is a composite of both places giving the impression that the Buddha towers over Victoria Peak and the Harbour when in reality it's located about 25 kilometres away to the west.

Rush Hour 2 - Jackie Chan (2001) - Big Buddha Statue, Lantau

The Big Buddha only featured as one of those travelogue style opening shots, just to make sure we all know that we are in HK (in case the Peak shots didn't convince you).

Knock Off - Jean Claude Van Damme (1997) - Big Buddha Statue, Lantau

The CIA, in the form of Paul Sorvino, have their headquarters in the Big Buddha statue on Lantau Island. A shot of the real statue is used as a establishing shot, and then a back projection (or maybe green screen) is used for a close up before Schneider and JCVD head into the bowels of the statue.

It's not so obvious from the screencap that the lower picture is superimposed, however, the lighting and focus is a bit off when you see it on screen. You'll just have to take my word for it :-)
