The Young Rebel - David Chiang (1975) - Waterloo Road, Ho Man Tin

I can't confirm the location of the grocery shop where Xiao Rong works (edit: see Rodney's comment below confirming it was at 63a Waterloo Road), but as he departs for his first delivery we can see this was shot on Waterloo Road opposite Ho Man Tin Street. The building with the curved facade in the background is Tsan Yung Mansion and is still located on the corner of Waterloo and Ho Man Tin Street. I removed my posts sometime ago due to low picture quality (taken from a VCD), but I had previously covered The Taxi Driver on ths blog and that building was the HQ of the Blue Taxi Cab Company who David Chiang works for in that film. I'll redo that film if it makes an appearance on the Shaw Bros channel as it had some interesting locations.

Hi, Phil. Quite sure the shop 'Hopeful Provision Store' was located at G/F 63A Waterloo Road. When the camera tilts up to the ceiling of the store, isn't that the somewhat straight part of Tsan Yung Mansion's facade? I think the shop next to the store was Audi NSU's showroom. I believe I saw it on a TVB or Rediffusion series, where a character goes to buy a car.

I've been looking at some of the full films on Shaw Brothers' YouTube lately, but can't manage to sit through anything with Chiang. The film uploaded just before this, 'When The Clouds Rolls By' has some of Sir Run Run's old place on Island Road.

Hi Rodney, thanks for the address of the shop. Honestly, I find it hard to watch his fighting style, he just looks so weak. As an actor though I don't mind him, but Ti Lung definitely was far more impressive in fight scenes. I passed Ti Lung on the escalators in Festival Walk afew months ago! I will check out that film later. I have just finished Summons for Death which has some nice places in it. Won't be posted until the end of Feb though. Phil

I have to revise what I said about being quite sure of the shop address. I actually found it in two directories and now my certainly the shop was at 63A rises to the proverbial 110%. It appeared for what should have been the final time in a 1978 directory, as the building in the film was demolished around '79. After the new building was completed, BMW took over the ground floor space. What I haven't been able to find was confirmation of the Audi NSU showroom next door.

I noticed a few houses in the Shaw Brothers films that later appeared in TVB series. One of the first Shaw films I ever saw, Summer Heat, had the same angle of Clear Water Bay Road as Interpol and the houses could be seen in greater detail.

I'll keep an eye out for Summer Heat. I just watched Summons to Death (posts coming soon) and noticed 11 Fei Ngo Shan Road popped up again. It makes me think it was owned by someone related to Shaws.
