The Generation Gap - David Chiang (1973) - Bayside Restaurant and Night Club, Chungking Mansions

Anyone familiar with my Bruce Lee stuff may recognise the name of this club as Bruce supposedly went to it (at least once, I guess). I can't confirm that, although it would've had to have been when he returned to Hong Kong in either 1963,  1965 or post 1970, but what I do know is that Mona Fong, girlfriend and later wife of Sir Run Run Shaw, was a club singer here in her earlier career. The interior is obviously a set but the exterior can be seen in several shots of the movie as Cindy's family try to track her down. The club was located in the basement of Chungking Mansions.

City on Fire - Chow Yun Fat (1987) - Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

As the car makes its getaway after the heist, we see it turn into Peking Road from Nathan Road. The Capital Restaurant in the background was located in Chungking Mansions although it changed names over the years - I believe it was originally the "Golden Capital" before becoming just "Capital" some time in the 1980s.

There was another shot of this area afew minutes before as the gang are casing up the various jewellery stores along Nathan Road - we catch a quick glimpse of Larry Jewellers which, for many years, was located on the SW corner of Nathan and Peking Roads.

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong - Jamie Chung (2015) - Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui

Ruby has ordered a suit for her fiance and Josh offers to accompany her to pick it up. The location turns out to be Chungking Mansions.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui

One of the few 'interiors' of this show that was actually shot on location. Jonah goes to Chungking Mansions in order to find a charger for his phone, which has remained bereft of life since before he left the UK.

Casse-tête chinois pour le Judoka - Marc Briand (1967) - Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

Despite arriving in Central from Mongkok, the next scene was filmed back over on Kowloon side. The overhead signboard is for the Moulin Rouge nightclub which was on Peking Road. The far background building is, of course, a blurry Chungking Mansion. The rather large gap to the left is where the Holiday Inn now stands. On the left of the upper photo and background of the lower one is the Hyatt Hotel (now iSquare) not long after its opening (in 1963). I'm not sure if it was still branded as the President Hotel at the time.

L'Inconnue de Hong Kong - Dalida (1963) - Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui

Another good spot from Thomas who was able to read the Chinese writing on the front of the building (樂聲牌陳列室) and determine that it was the "National Appliances" showroom. He was able to confirm from the current company website that they opened up a new showroom in Chungking Mansions in 1962 and it certainly does look as though this particular screen shot from the film was taken right at the main entrance. Chungking Mansions had opened in 1961 (back then it was a rather upmarket residential development - a far cry from its current reputation as cheap hostel complex), the National Appliance showroom opened in 1962 and then this film was shot in 1963.

Johnny English Reborn - Rowan Atkinson (2011) - Chungking Mansion, Tsim Sha Tsui

The action moves back over to Hong Kong for our next scene as English is following up a lead from the casino. The lead takes him to a shabby hotel - the Kowloon Paradise Hotel - that appears to be located somewhere in Chungking Mansion.

The end of the scene involves a chase that takes us up to the roof of the building where English is after a rather nimble thief portrayed by the parkour expert, Williams Belle.

An impressive leap from block to block performed by Belle.

Most of the action appears to have been filmed on the roof of Blocks B & C but for the last picture, Williams Belle had already jumped the gap between Block C and E and that last view is looking from Block E out across the harbour. Belle's character actually utilises some scaffolding to escape and I do remember that Chungking Mansion was completely covered in the stuff at around that time whilst it was undergoing some external renovation.

Bons Baisers de Hong Kong - Les Charlots (1975) - Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

There's some nice colourful street scenes in this film including this brief look north up Nathan Road near the southern end. You can see the Holiday Inn sign which puts us in familiar tourist territory. Both Mirador Mansion and Chungking Mansions can be seen either side of the Holiday Inn - Chungking Mansions being closer to the camera..

Note the Royal paraphernalia draped on the lamp posts. Don't forget this film was made the same time as the Queen's 1975 trip to HK and utilises a lot of the footage from that for its own plot.
