DOA: Dead or Alive - Devon Aoki (2006) - Connaught Road, Central

More sights from the bike escape as we drive back towards Central along Connaught Road. The first image shows the bike heading east along Connaught Road right in front of the Admiralty Centre. This area has changed a fair bit due to the construction of the new Govt HQ building on the north side of the road. There is now a foot bridge that links both sides of the road almost directly above where the bike is. Also, for some reason the MTR decided to take down their large illuminated sign.

Then, all of a sudden we are heading back in the opposite direction, but along the same stretch of road. In the first image below, the illuminated building in the far right is Exchange Square and if you look carefully you can make out City Hall in front of it. On the left is the AIA Central building which replaced the Furama Hotel just a few years prior to filming. The second image shows the view looking back in the opposite direction with a bus pulling out in front of the Hong Kong Club building (far right of image).

Yellowthread Street (TV Series) - Bruce Payne (1990) - Central Vehicular Ferry Pier, Hong Kong

In the spirit of true nostalgia, here is a sequence from the beginning of Chinese Boxes in which we see the camera pan from Blake pier down to the vehicular ferry pier in Central - neither of which are around today (largely because the water here has also been replaced by land!).

Above we see the familiar angled shape of the final version of Blake Pier with the two Star Ferry piers behind it. As the camera moves downward we can see the small flyover that led from the upper deck of the vehicular ferry. On the right is Exchange Square which means the small road in front (with several walkways across it) is today's Harbour View Street. The waterfront next to it now occupied by the IFC complex and Hong Kong Station.

The vehicular pier itself - at the end of Harbour View St - was sited where the smaller IFC tower now stands.

Noble House (Mini series) - Pierce Brosnan (1988) - Exchange Square, Central

The scene that involves the short-selling of Noble House shares was filmed at the real HK Stock Exchange. We'll see some screencaps for that in a later post but in the meantime here is Exchange Square where it was (still is?) located. The sculpture that occupies the centre of the plaza is by Henry Moore and is called Oval with Points.
