Hong Kong 73 - Yueh Hua (1974) - Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan

The last location from this film is Hollywood Road in front of Man Mo Temple as Chan's father returns home from work and learns that his neighbour has committed suicide by jumping off a building. He was a stock broker and suffered a huge loss when he mistakenly bought fake shares. It's one of the weirder subplots for a "comedy" but I guess satire comes in manay forms. Anyway, the scene shows a red minibus driving along Hollywood Road and stopping outside the temple where Mr Chan alights.

Benson - Robert Guillaume (1984) - Ladder Street, Sheung Wan

While the Governor and Benson are out looking for clues around Upper Lascar Row, they find a pot with an emblem on it which may be related  to Clayton's kidnapping. Benson suspects someone is following them and hangs back only to find out it is Kraus. Meanwhile the Governor spots the car that Clayton was abducted in and jumps in a taxi to follow. All this takes place around the area where Upper Lascar Row, Ladder Street and Hollywood Road join up.

Bloodfight - Yasuaki Kurata (1989) - Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road

A brief view of Man Mo Temple precedes the scene where the gang beat up a stall owner before her daughter turns up and kung-fus them all.

Blade in Hong Kong - Terry Lester (1985) - Ladder Street, Sheung Wan

After a tour bus chase (a location I haven't been able to identify yet), the bad guys run into the antique emporium on the corner of Hollywood Road and Ladder Street. The sequence starts with a view of the junction of Ladder/Square Streets as Blade loses sight of the baddies. He asks a young passerby - "Half-time" - and after some haggling learns they had entered the shop. This same location also features at the very end of the film as Blade goes back to see Half-time in front of the Man Mo Temple.

So we see Square Street, Ladder Street, Hollywood Road and Man Mo Temple. The first five images are from the initial chase scene, and the lower ones in front of Man Mo Temple are from the end of the film.

Asia-Pol Secret Service - Wang Yu (1966) - Man Mo Temple, Sheung Wan

Wang Yu takes a visit to Hong Kong's most filmed temple on Hollywood Road, Man Mo Temple. It's there where he notices someone has followed him and so he returns the favour.

Tokyo Gang vs Hong Kong Gang - Ken Takakura (1964) - Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road

Another of the locations the taxis drive past whilst Chang follows Kitahara is the Man Mo Temple. It's only a brief, in-car shot. 

The Black Dragon's Revenge - Ronnie Van Clief (1975) - Man Mo Temple, Sheung Wan

Man Mo Temple actually makes two appearances in this film. Its main role is of the interior of the temple/kung fu school where "Bruce" is supposed to have studied. The interior of the temple is used for all the scenes involving the students training and talking inside with their master. If you're wondering why it looks so spacious, it's probably because it is missing the large rack of incense coils that normally hang from the ceiling. All the exteriors for the temple/school were another location that I have yet to find.

However, the temple forecourt also shows up later in the film as the training ground for a kung fu master who claims to have killed Bruce with his deadly fists and two of the students go to his school to challenge him to ascertain whether or not he has the power/ability to have done what he claims (spoiler: no).

Anyway, the first few images show the Man Mo Temple interior as the inside of the good guys' kung fu school and the lower images obviously show the mentioned challenge fight. The funny thing to see in these images is all the locals sticking their heads through the railings to watch the filming. I guess the location manager for this film was on holiday that day.

Challenge of the Tiger - Bruce Le (1982) - Man Mo Temple, Sheung Wan

Man Mo temple appears in the sequence showing the bad guys going about doing their business.

The Heroin Busters - Fabio Testi (1977) - Hollywood Road, Hong Kong

As Testi wanders around collecting his bags of powder, another of is pick ups is inside the famous Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road.

I'm curious about the dome in the background of the first shot. Testi enters Hollywood Road from an alleyway which seems to correspond to where the western edge of today's park opposite the temple (directly south of Yu Hing Lane). I wonder if anyone can recall what the dome was part of. I did think it may have been the roof of the old Central Theatre but the timeline doesn't fit (this film was made after it was demolished) and besides, it's the wrong shape. 

Foxbat - Henry Silva (1977) - Square Street, Sheung Wan

In one of those strange time/space movie wormholes, after catching up along Hollywood Road, the action suddenly leaps back to Square Street right next to Man Mo Temple as a bunch of school kids and their lollipop man are nearly run over by the speeding vehicles.

It looks like the building that can be seen at the bottom of Square Street in the second picture once occupied part of what is now the back of the temple. I had no idea it encroached so far into the back of the temple until now. These days it looks like a new building has been joined onto the temple at that section and the outer wall has been completely rebuilt.

In the lower picture, the green building at the back is still there and you may or may not remember me talking about it previously during the I Spy posts.

Talking about Mui Yan, he was multi-talented. He acted, was also a voice actor. He had an electronic appliance shop in Causeway opposite the President Cinema in the 1980s where I bought my first Sony Walkman there, and he used to be a Barber in a Shanghainese barber shop in Causeway Bay.

Les Tribulations d'un Chinois en Chine - Jean-Paul Belmondo (1965) - Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan

In the film, we are given the impression that this next scene is directly next to the previous scene in Central. Of course this is the famous Man Mo Temple along Hollywood Road and in reality a fair walk from that last location in Central. Belmondo goes here twice in the film (both times on the run from pursuers) and enters the temple. I've included a couple of screencaps of the interior but I'm (at the moment) not 100% sure it's the real interior - although the column bases do seem to match the real ones.

Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold - Tamara Dobson (1975) - Ladder Street, Sheung Wan

Not just Ladder Street but several parts of it including the area around Man Mo Temple. This, believe it or not, is still the same foot chase that started in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The above pictures are of the junction with Hollywood Road above. The antique shop with the round door/window is still there. The shots below though I'm not so sure - I think they might be the part of Ladder Street that joins with Caine Road - however, the block at the back has recently been redeveloped so I can't confirm.

However, if I'm right and the above bit is the Caine Road section, then this bit below, where the steps get quite wide, could be the section of Ladder Street between Caine Road and Bridges Street.

Anyway, after all that the sequence ends up back at the junction with Hollywood Road with Man Mo Temple making yet another film/TV appearance. I think it must be one of the most-filmed places of worship in HK.
