Vengeance - Johnny Hallyday (2009) - Ponte Governador Nobre de Carvalho, Macau

The next film is Vengeance - a joint French/HK production directed by famed HK director, Johnnie To. It stars the French superstar, Johnny Hallyday (who just recently passed away in December 2017), as a former hitman who has come to Macau to exact revenge on the people that assassinated his daughter's family. It's a bit slow in places and slightly preposterous in others but overall a good story with lots of locations in both HK and Macau. It opens with a shot of a taxi driving over the Governador Nobre de Carvalho bridge towards the peninsula.

Challenge of the Tiger - Bruce Le (1982) - Praça de Ferreira do Amaral, Macau

Just in front of the Hotel Lisboa is the Praça de Ferreira do Amaral. It's a circular road that has a park in the centre, but prior to 1992 it also had a large imposing statue of the 79th Governor of Macau, João Maria Ferreira do Amaral. The statue was removed in 1992 at the request of the Chinese Govt because the man it symbolised was a rather controversial figure who ended his days by being assassinated just beyond the Barrier Gate that once formed the northern border between Macau and Mainland China.

The impending return of Macau to China hastened the necessity of its removal and it was taken down - without any fuss - and shipped back to Portugal where it now stands, with a slightly less imposing pedestal, in the Jardim da Encarnação. These days the park has some rather uninspiring, but uncontroversial, glass sculptures.

We also catch a brief glimpse of the Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge which runs across the bay from here connecting the Macau peninsula with Taipa island.

China Rose - George C. Scott (1983) - Ferry Terminal, Macau

Just when you thought we had left Macau for good, the scene of the hydrofoil arriving at port in HK was actually filmed back in Macau! The giveaway is the view of the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge in the background - at a time when it could still be easily seen from the ferry terminal. I'm not sure why they filmed this bit back in Macau, but I am wondering if the crew couldn't get a permit (or it was too expensive for what was a TV movie) to film at the HK-side.

Jaguar Lives - Joe Lewis (1978) - Penha Church, Macau

Our last post for Jaguar Lives for the time being as we see Joe (or at least a stuntman) busting some moves on the square in front of Penha Church.

The last picture gives us a nice view looking towards Taipa and the Ponte Governador Nobre de Carvalho connecting Taipa to the Macau peninsula.

Kung Fu Killers - Grant Page (1974) - Hotel Lisboa and the Macau-Taipa Bridge, Macau

A nice (but would be better in HD) view of the Lisboa Hotel - Stanley Ho's famous landmark hotel/ casino situated at the southern end of the Macau peninsula. I actually quite like the kitsch decor even though it's not to everyone's taste.

As the camera pans south (i.e. to the right) we get a glimpse of the Macau<->Taipa Bridge or to call it by its official Portuguese name - the Ponte Governador Nobre de Carvalho. Although I believe at the time of this filming, the bridge had yet to open to the public. Taipa is in the far background.

Flatfoot in Hong Kong - Bud Spencer (1975) - Avenida Da Republica, Macau

Now we move the action over to Macau and one of our first shots is taken from the praya overlooking the channel between the Macau Peninsular and (what was) Taipa Island and the bridge linking the two: Ponte Governador Nobre De Carvalho.

These days the view is now obscured by the reclamation that has created the Sai Van Lake and the Macau Tower but everything else has stayed put including the low wall with its drain holes which can be seen in the top shot.

Of course at the end of this bridge on the peninsular side is the famous, original, Lisboa Hotel and casino and here we see it through the driver's windscreen (just to the left of the dude's head).
