She Shoots Straight - Joyce Godenzi (1990) - Club BBoss, East TST

The establishing shot for the night club raid used a shot of the entrance of what was to become Club BBoss. The venue has had an interesing history over the years. Originally called "Club Volvo" (it can be seen in this form in Blade in Hong Kong), however, Volvo (the car company) found out and proceeded to sue the owners. Volvo won and the club owners agreed to change the club name to "Club Borubo" (Borubo was the Japanese pronunciation of "Volvo"). This occurred sometime around 1990 - and it's possibly this form of the club that can be seen in the images below.

The neon lights on the exterior in the shots below are significantly more extravagant than when the club was "Volvo", and even when it was "BBoss". If you look carefully though you can see the original neon signage behind the front section. So, a question for TST experts - was this the signage for when it was Club Borubo, or is this a prop stuck on the front for the film?

Anyway, the club became Club BBoss in the 90s and stayed that way until it closed down around ten years ago (as I write in 2026). It was recently reinvented and reopened as "Club Big Boss Generation" at the same venue, but I believe this life was short-lived and it closed down again within 2 months due to investor in-fighting.

Blade in Hong Kong - Terry Lester (1985) - Club Volvo, Tsim Sha Tsui

I've featured this club on the blog previously under its later name of Club BBoss. But originally it was called Club Volvo. What happened? I believe Volvo found out about the club name and threatened to sue the club owners for trademark infringement. The SCMP did an article on the place a while back and I was contacted back then by the writer asking if she could pinch a couple of my screen caps for the piece, so, if you can get past the paywall (or read a re-print here) you might see that they used some screencaps from the Chris Evans movie, Push, provided by yours truly.

Anyway, in Blade in Hong Kong this is the location where Krista has been told to meet the kidnappers to discuss the ransom. Blade goes in her place and meets up with the kidnapper, played by Antony Newly.

Chinese Box - Jeremy Irons (1997) - Club BBoss, Tsim Sha Tsui

One of Hong Kong's premiere hostess bars closed in 2012. The founder of the club and owner of the building in which it was housed (the New Mandarin Plaza in East TST) decided he could get more money letting the space to other commercial interested and so the club was closed.

I do remember the massive neon sign that used to shine down from the building but I had no idea that they used to have a small car inside driving people around. Oh dear, what a sheltered life I have obviously been leading...

Anyway, in the film it's where Irons gets invited to by Gong Li so they can indulge in some mutual self appreciation.

If you're wondering where the entrance used to be it was on the side of the building that fronted Science Museum Square. Streetview is obviously several years old for this area at the moment (2011 I would guess) so we can still see the old entrance even though it has now gone.
