Hong Kong 73 - Yueh Hua (1974) - Monmouth Terrace, Kennedy Road

Chan goes to find his car after the friends borrowed it and turns up to find it is a wreck and about to get a ticket. This scene was filmed on the service/petrol station layby off Kennedy Road where Monmouth Terrace stands. The structure with the windows on the right of the top image is still there and is the service station building. Behind the policemen is a road sign that says "Monmouth Path". The path starts just behind them and goes down to Star Street area in Wanchai.

The Lady Professional - Lily Ho Li-li (1971) - Gloucester Road, Wanchai

The two main nefarious antagonists discuss the need to kill Shi as they drive along Gloucester Road in their Rolls Royce. In the background you can see a building site with Far East Motors Ltd on the front hoarding. This was the location of the former Far East Motors car showroom that can be seen in the back of a shot from The World of Suzie Wong. Behind it is the large B.A.T factory that stood along the waterfront until the mid-70s when it was replaced by Elizabeth House. The in-car scenes were obviously shot over a long period as the background outside changes from Harcourt Road to Queen's Road Central. This shot below was the establishing shot for the sequence.

Hung Hing Road - Now and Then

I recently walked some of the newly minted Hong Kong Island waterfront walk and noted that it takes you along Hung Hing Road right next to the entrance to the Cross Harbour Tunnel. Having just recently covered this bit of road for She Shoots Straight I took the opportunity to grab some modern day comparisons.

The Champions - Stuart Damon (1967) - Hennessy Road, Wanchai

Next up in our montage of Hong Kong establishing scenes is a view along Hennessy Road. This particular street corner is the junction with Marsh Road and you can see the same curved building in this earlier photo over on Gwulo.com. I'm still not sure when this library footage was shot but you can see that the adverts on the corner of the building were in place during the late 50s. Those with a bit of HK knowledge might be able to discern the old Tung Tak pawnshop building that was this side of the Marsh Road junction. You can see its old vertical blue sign on the left in both images below.

Full Contact - Chow Yun Fat (1992) - Harbour Drive, Wanchai

Following the shootout in the club with Judge (the famous one with the bullets striking in mid-air), Jeff, Sam and Mona escape in Jeff's car and drive down Harbour Drive from the direction of Gloucester Road.

The car is then also seen driving west along Harbour Road, right next to the junction with Harbour Drive.

Benson - Robert Guillaume (1984) - The Excelsior Hotel, Causeway Bay

Following Kraus being kidnapped by the bad guys, Benson flees to the roof of what is supposed to be the warehouse but is in fact the roof of the now demolished Excelsior Hotel. Sadly, this is the last Benson post until I can figure out some of the other blurry shots that pop up randomly throughout the show.

Bullet for Hire - Simon Yam (1991) - Stone Nullah Lane, Wanchai

Han and Shan are sent on their first job together, which (although Shan doesn't know it) is to kidnap the wife and daughter of one of their fellow gangsters. It turns out that boss doesn't like his hitmen to have any attachments outside of their jobs and so the loose ends must be tied up. Shan messes the kidnap up and Han finishes off the mother in a brutally comedic fashion - he shoots her in the head and her body falls back onto a hawker trolley which then rolls down the road. The large building with the red trim is the St James' Settlement building.

She Shoots Straight - Joyce Godenzi (1990) - Fenwick Pier Street, Wanchai

Mina grabs a motorcycle and continues the chase along Fenwick Pier Street. You can see the side of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the background. The lower three images are from the end of the car chase as the baddies crash. this last bit was filmed closer to the hotel. That area used to be an intersection but has since been turned into a roundabout.

She Shoots Straight - Joyce Godenzi (1990) - Lung King Street, Wanchai

The bad guys stop their car and turn to shoot a truck at the side of the road, which explodes and creates a huge fireball through which Mina rides the motorcycle. This was filmed along Lung King Street. There used to be a sewage screening plant here (that's the low white wall you can see at the side of the road), which itself has been used as a filming location, but has been subsequently demolished. The road has also undergone some realignment following the last round of reclamation and the creation of the Central/Wanchai Bypass.

She Shoots Straight - Joyce Godenzi (1990) - Hung Hing Road, Wanchai

Quite a few shots from the subsequent car chase were shot along Hung Hing Road next to the Cross Harbour Tunnel Entrance. The order of the images below is the same as the order in the film. You can see the concrete lattice roof of the tunnel entrance in the background of the second and third images.

She Shoots Straight - Joyce Godenzi (1990) - Harbour Road Pedestrian Bridge

Following the princess's kidnapping, Mina runs to the pedestrian bridge that crosses Harbour Road and takes a few shots at it before jumping onto some nearby advertising banners. Here's the current view of the middle image.

Ballad of a Small Player - Colin Farrell (2025) - Grand Hyatt Hotel, Wanchai

Doyle gets his money, but is then left with a huge restaurant bill. Some how he makes it to Hong Kong and heads to the Grand Hyatt in Wanchai. He then stuffs his face silly and tries his best to delay having to pay his bill until he has a medical episode.
