Anyway, it turns out that the club was located at 42 - 50 Lockhart Road in what looks to be the basement(?) of the building still known as "de Fenwick". The building itself is still around and was built in 1966. It's quite an attractive building.

Bruce Lee & I - Betty Ting Pei (1976) - Back Door Club, Lockhart Road
Part of the film revolves around Betty telling her life story to a bartender in somewhere called the "Back Door Club". It's not around anymore and initially I had thought that perhaps these scenes were filmed in a studio, but I don't think they are. Perhaps if anyone remembers going to the place they can either confirm or deny whether it is the actual place.

Looks like Back Door Club was still there at least as late as 1978.
I think Outback should rename themselves "Outback Door Club" :-)
That would gel quite well with my experience of Outback's food. :-)
I'm going to be in HK in a few weeks time, by the way, so I'll have to add some movie locations to my to-visit list. Time to scour your blog for some good ones to hit! :-)

i've got locations coming out of my ears at the moment. behind by several movies and still more i spy stuff to do...
Perhaps they're better in HK than in the USA. I gave up on them a few years back because everything was just so over-the-top salty every time I went there. (And I like more salt on my food than almost anybody I know, so that's saying something.)
One location that's definitely on my to-do list for the vacation is the Tai Po Railway Museum, thanks to your recommendations, btw. :-)
I had met a girl in one of the Lockhart Road bars in '72, and wrote to her a number of times after I got home. Around '73 or so, she mentioned that she was working in the "Back Door club" (I think I actually have a polaroid of her in her working uniform somewhere. 42-50 Lockhart had previously been the location of the Candlelight Bar.
That study of Lockhart Road was rather interesting. It explained to me why the "White Horse bar" seen in my 1962 video was gone by '67-the building it was in, 42-50 Lockhart, was torn down and a new one built on the site in '66, then becoming the home of the Candlelight Bar, and finally the Back Door Club.
It's an interesting topic I think...and brought to you the same weekend that Joe Bananas closed down :-/
I've been trying to document a bit of that Lockhart Road history on my Flickr page. I keep an eye out for wanchai photos on ebay, but apparently so are a few other "regulars", and the bidding is fierce. What is sad is that if I don't get the photo, they vanish from sight-I never see them on the web again. I put the ones I get up on my page for all to see (and copy, I suppose).
I knew a few from that time as well. One called herself Sandra, the other name forgotten ATM.
