Pedicab Driver - Sammo Hung (1989) - Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Taipa

The scene where Malt Candy (Max Mok) first meets Siu Chui (Fennie Yuen) by knocking her over with his pedicab was filmed in front of the Carmel Church on Taipa. This is a popular spot for period Hong Kong films over the years and has been seen here before several times. It also features a bit later in the movie as Sammo's pedicab is being chased down by the gangster's car (bottom image).

China Cry - Julia Nickson (1990) - Avenida de Carlos da Maia, Taipa

We're up to the top of the hill this time and looking along the small road that runs alongside the Carmel Church. It's called the Avenida de Carlos da Maia and looks pretty much the same on the current Streetview (posted underneath). Although look closely and you'll see that a lot has been done to tidy the area up - shame about the tree not being there though.

The Macau authorities also did a nice job tidying up the Biblioteca opposite the church.

China Cry - Julia Nickson (1990) - Dra. Laurinda M. Esparteiro Garden, Taipa

Here's a location that should be familiar to Jackie Chan fans. It's the garden that lies at the bottom of the hill below the Carmel Church in Taipa and has a set of steps running down it that JC athletically jumps down (when he could still do that stuff) and turns around only to find his girlfriend still stuck at the top. Here's a reminder.

In China Cry it's where Julia Nickson is riding along after school and witnesses some Communist brutality against a priest and some nuns. 

This is still one of the more pleasant places to visit in Macau if you get the time and thankfully hasn't changed so much (unlike the view to the south - off camera to the left - which is now chockablock with gaudy tacky resort casinos).

Miracles - Jackie Chan (1989) - Largo Do Carmo, Taipa

One of the first set pieces of this film starts with JC seated in a quiet square where he first meets the flower seller and his run of luck starts. The end of the scene ends with a gangsters car crashing nearby and he inadvertently gets promoted to lead the crime gang thanks to a unfortunate misunderstanding.

Well, the square we first see JC in is the very same square - in front of the Carmel Church in Taipa - that was used for part of the bike chase from Project A. The scene starts with a glimpse from the church bell tower.

Here is JC sitting in the square under a wooden gazebo. The gazebo was a prop (which then got smashed by the car) but the building behind wasn't and still sits in the same place looking very much like the old colonial building it was meant to be (and was, just Portuguese Colonial instead of British).

And here is our first glimpse of the happy-go-lucky flower lady (Lady Rose) standing in front of the colonnaded library (there is currently a replica there, but I have no idea when it was erected and whether or not this is the replica or original seen on film).

Project A - Jackie Chan (1983) - Carmel Church, Taipa, Macau

Just after this scene, JC and girlfriend are still running from the guys on bikes, only in reality they have filmed this bit back up at the top of Monte Dos Amores in the courtyard of the Carmel Church - instantly recognisable by its large stone cross as seen below.

The cross is still there, and of course so is the church although along with the rest of Macau it's been given a nice fresh lick of paint. Here's a recent snap taken on my last trip at Lunar New Year looking towards the Biblioteca in the background.

 Of course, after JC has vaulted the wall he makes a tremendous effort to lead his GF - Isabella Wong - down and over the rest of the stairway only to look back and see she is still stuck at the top. The staircase is of course right next to the stone cross and it does lead down the hill - it's still there and it too has been given a bit of a facelift.

Yes, that is the bell tower of the Carmel Church behind Isabella Wong. Notice the curved bits of concrete at the bottom of the picture? Well, these are just a bit of decoration that cover the small slope leading up to the church - I believe the place is actually a small park but its name eludes me at the moment.
