Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Central Ferry Piers

Here's some nice night time shots of the Central Ferry Piers area. They're just filler shots that serve no purpose other than to show off a bit of Hong Kong scenery. Note what looks to be Xmas light decorations which gives a small hint as to around the time of year the film was shot.

The Thieves - Kim Yoon-seok (2012) - Central Pier 9, Central

The Chinese gang, led by Chen (Simon Yam), recruit a new safe cracker and meet up with her at Pier 9 on the Central harbourfront. This is the same pier that saw some filming for Something Good the following year.

Irreversi - Mei Melançon (2010) - IFC Walkway, Central

This is the pedestrian walkway that connects the large IFC development with the Central Ferry Piers elevated walkway and Pier 3. This is where Lynda and her bestie, Kat, have a heart to heart about Lynda's marriage.

Something Good - Luca Barbareschi (2013) - Central Pier 9, Hong Kong

Mr Feng meets up with the crooked copper (is there any other type at the moment?) to discuss what to do with Matteo. The rendezvous location is Pier No.9 along the Central harbourfront. This is one of the two public-use piers at the end of the long line of ferry piers in front of the IFC. To be honest, it was much better when the harbourfront wasn't reclaimed and boats would use Queen's Pier, but those days are long gone.

The Mole Song: Hong Kong Capriccio - Toma Ikuta (2016) - Central Waterfront, Hong Kong

Like much of these Hong Kong locations in this film, they are a combination of real locations mixed with CGI wizardry. In this shot, the crew are trying to infiltrate the auction at the IFC2 building by sneaking into the drain system that runs underneath the building. Of course there is no such thing and the clip used is of a real location shot for the background combined with some jiggery-pokery done in post production to add the waterfront. The real location for the background element of this scene was, by the looks of it, next to the pedestrian walkway at the Central Ferry Piers. i.e. Man Kwong Street in front of pier #7.

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong - Jamie Chung (2015) - Central Ferry Piers, Hong Kong

The Star ferry plays a role in the second part of the film because it is where Josh and Ruby bump into each other again and strike up their friendship from the previous year. The sequence starts off with an establishing shot of the main pier building before moving around the area as Josh makes his way to the ferry.

Skyscraper - Dwayne Johnson (2018) - Central Ferry Piers, Hong Kong

The early scene when Johnson crosses the harbour on the "Victoria Ferry Company" (I guess the Star Ferry didn't want their name used) is a mixture of on-location footage and studio based ones. So for instance the ferry approaching the TST pier is obviously real. However, the follow up shot of the actors on the boat looks to me like a set. The ferry replica is good but the riveted windows are not the same as the real things which are inset into the frame and can be slid up and down.

Anyway, what follows after that is - what I think might be - the only shot from the whole film that features Dwayne Johnson physically on location in Hong Kong.

Finally, as the ferry comes into dock, we get a couple of real shots edited together with a not-so-great replica ferry pier for the close ups. So the first two, are obviously the real pier.
