Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

A body is discovered on the beach. An old guy working on the shoreline of Lau Fau Shan sees it on the shore. The smoggy view over to the opposite coast is looking at Mainland China across the Shenzhen Bay. We've seen this are a couple of times in the past. It was where the seaside shootout in Shatter takes place, and also a bit of Spearhead was filmed here back in the early 80's.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

David and Jonah's mysterious wife kept a small bolt hole out in the middle of nowhere. I'm not sure about the actual building used, but the build up to the scene was filmed with Jonah and Lau Chen arriving at the bus terminus in Lau Fau Shan followed by them walking through the village.

Spearhead in Hong Kong - Stafford Gordon (1981) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

For the fourth episode - The Macau Connection - the soldiers are on II patrol in the far north west of the territory in Lau Fau Shan. Sgt Bilinski has been compromised in Macau by the snakeheads and use this as an opportunity the distract the team and get a whole boat load of illegal immigrants through the cordon.

I neglected to take a screen shot but one of the first sequences of the show is film of soldiers' boots stomping through the beach littered with the oyster shells that made this location so famous. But you can make some out on the beach in the first image below.

Push - Chris Evans (2009) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

The next location was a bit tricky to nail until I did a search on one of the shops signs in the background. The scene is when Nick (Evans) first meets with Cassie (Dakota Fanning) and she tries to convince him of her sincerity. They pop out for some noodles, but actually the scene was shot all the way up in the most north westerly point of the New Territories in Lau Fau Shan. Regular readers may recognise the name from when I was doing all the Shatter posts last year. The area was once famous for its local oysters but these days the pollution in Shenzhen Bay makes tasting them a slightly risky activity. It also explains again why Yuen Long District Office was thanked in the end credits.

Anyway, I wouldn't have found this place if it wasn't for the white sign at the back of the middle picture. The Chinese says 牛記海味 (Ngau Gei Hoi Mei) which is the name for a Chinese marine products shop (Anglicised as Ngau Kee). A quick Google search using the Chinese name brings up quite a bit of info including the address in Lau Fau Shan village. One of the results was also a Youtube video about the place. If you forward to 2:50 you'll see exactly the same view as in the lower screen capture. So it's quite obvious that these scenes were filmed at night (initially giving me the impression that it was filmed indoors).

Shatter - Stuart Whitman (1974) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

Not quite the film's finale, but almost, as Shatter goes out to confront the bad guys at Lau Fau Shan up in the far northwest part of the New Territories (it's actually part of Yuen Long District). Its halcyon days of oyster cultivation are now over - perhaps as a result of the amount of pollution in Deep Bay these days - and these days it is perhaps more popular for its various restaurants (just don't eat the oysters!) and the mangroves along the coastline and its nearby wetland area. It's also the origin of the Shenzhen Bay bridge - one of the various entry points into the mainland from Hong Kong.

The screen capture immediately above quite clearly shows the small range of hillocks on the Shenzhen side of the bay. They are still there - not yet leveled by the rapid development that has gone on - but now this particular view is blocked by the aforementioned bridge crossing. The larger northern part of that small ridge line can also be seen in the capture below.
