Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Fa Yuen Street, Mongkok

Most of the new locations seen in Episode 5 are not really ones where the actors have scenes but are part of a montage of establishing shots. For instance, this brief shot of a seemingly generic neon lit (or LED-lit as it tends to be these days) street pops up half way through the episode. It is actually Fa Yuen Street in Mongkok, looking south from the junction with Fife Street.

The fourth image shows another section of the same road, this time seen from the Mongkok Road pedestrian walkway looking north. It's also one of (or similar to) the shots used in the opening credits.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Sai Yee Street, Mongkok

Some more views from the FEHD Quarters on Sai Yee Street during Episode 5.

But there is also a glimpse inside the flat which confirms that the flat itself was constructed in a studio. Okay, I had already established that the door into their flat was in fact the fire door onto a stairwell, but the various scenes of people going into the flat were done so well it was very convincing. Also, the place was so generously proportioned inside, even if they had used one of these Govt quarters it was still far too large to fit the scene.

The final problem is this view from the living room window. This is actually the view looking south down Tung Choi Street from the Mongkok Road pedestrian bridge. Obviously there are no apartments in this exact location, just the bridge/walkway, so it looks as though the crew must have taken some footage from the bridge and (I guess) they had a large HD television screen behind the window just playing back the footage. It's very convincing either way.

Edit: I was passing the area earlier today (07/03/2019) and popped up to get the same view, so here it is.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long

A body is discovered on the beach. An old guy working on the shoreline of Lau Fau Shan sees it on the shore. The smoggy view over to the opposite coast is looking at Mainland China across the Shenzhen Bay. We've seen this are a couple of times in the past. It was where the seaside shootout in Shatter takes place, and also a bit of Spearhead was filmed here back in the early 80's.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Wilson Road, Jardine's Lookout

Jonah goes to find Kai Huang at his home address. The location is Wilson Road below Jardine's Lookout (number 19a is the address he goes to and asks the cleaning lady where Kai Huang is). The mountain in the background is Mt Nicholson and the two high rises popping up in the background are Nicholson Towers on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Shum Wan Road, Wong Chuk Hang

Shum Wan Road pops up a couple of times in Episode 5. Initially of course it is used as the establishing shot for the private marina that Jonah went to whilst following David Chen, and these are the two top shots below (the "To's Boats" sign is a real one by the way).

However, we also see part of the same area again later when Jonah decides to find out the address of Kai Huang by going to the charter company and asking for an address. For this scene, one of the several boat and marine companies based along Shum Wan Road was used and turned into "Asian Riviera Charters". The map seems to get a bit confused here because even though the road is identified as Shum Wan Road, the actual address of the shipyard is #20 Po Chong Wan Road, so I am not sure where one starts and the other ends. Anyway, the real life company is called Shum Wan Marine.

Strangers - John Simm (2018) - Rotunda do Istmo, Taipa

Episode 5 has fewer locations on offer than previous ones and many of them are part of general travelogue style shots to fill the gaps between scenes. We start off, unsurprisingly, where #4 left off - with Jonah on the private boat at a Macau marina. However, we have already established that the marina was in fact back in Hong Kong. The film makers are seeking to show otherwise by opening with an establishing shot of Macau. This is another shot of the Rotunda do Istmo. The top image showing an angle looking slightly to the west. The body of water in the right is the lake/wetland (former sea now encapsulated by the reclamation and, no doubt, swapped with freshwater) that sits between the Avenida de Praia on Taipa (where the Taipa houses museum now stands) and the Cotai Strip.

You may have spotted the bottom image is the same one used in the previous episode.
