Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Gloucester Road, Wanchai

In a previously unused bit of footage for this final episode, The Runaway, we see Lloyd Bochner driving his police car along the Wanchai waterfront. You can just make out a white blur amongst the water facing buildings along Gloucester Road which is the still standing Wanchai Police Station (on the left side of the first two images) which means the curved building marks the junction with Fleming Road.

In a wonderfully prescient nod to current events in Hong Kong, Bochner stops outside a dive bar on the Wanchai waterfront called "Carrie" as he continues his search for a missing female. This is not the first time that the words "missing female" and "Carrie" have been used in Hong Kong since the anti-Govt protests started in June 2019. Just sayin'...

I'm just guessing but the bar's location in 1960 seems to tally with the current Dah Sing Financial Centre in the block between Fleming and O'Brien Roads.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong

It seems that the producers were quite keen to use up as much of their Hong Kong location footage as possible because the final episode has quite a few never-seen-before clips including this one of Rod Taylor driving his little white sports car along the waterfront at Shau Kei Wan. You can see Devil's Peak poking up in the background of the second image which means this is pretty much the same location as can be seen here.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Central Police Compound, Central

It seems only fitting that for the very last episode of this show (Ep:26), The Runaway, we are taking one last look at the Central Police Station Compound off Hollywood Road. There is a little bit of reuse of some images (for instance, this sequence from the episode was originally seen in Blind Bargain) but there are a few new angles that hadn't been used before. don't forget that this whole complex is now open to the public and now goes by the name of Tai Kwun.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Aberdeen Harbour, Aberdeen

In a brief scene, from Colonel Cat, shot in Aberdeen, Lloyd Bochman's Chief Inspector Campbell boards a sampan and makes his way over to what looks like the Sea Palace. I can't say for certain but the circular decoration close to where he boards looks very much like part of the ornamentation that used to be on the front of that, now disappeared, 'floating' restaurant.On an aside, you can see the old Police Station on the hill in the background.

This was footage used several times throughout the series and it occurs in a much longer version in the very last episode.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Magazine Gap Road, Mid-levels

In one of the driving scenes from episode 8, Colonel Cat, Evans (Taylor) is driving his signature car around one of the hairpin bends on Magazine Gap Road. The "driving up" part of the sequence was also reused for the last episode, The Runaway.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Central Police Station Compound, Central

I'm sticking with the Central Police Station (now Tai Kwun) for the next episode, Blind Bargain. This is the episode adapted from the un-aired pilot that co-starred Alex Davion in the original Chief Inspector role.

Various descriptions on the web say that the pilot was a cut down version of this episode, however, the way the characters interact and the way the story plays out in this episode, it looks to me more likely that this episode was constructed from the pilot footage with extra pick up shots inserted to pad the episode out to its 50 minute length (the original pilot was only 30 mins). An example would be the friendliness between Taylor's and Davion's characters that implies a close friendship despite the fact that for this episode, Davion is supposed to be a quick replacement brought in to fill in for Lloyd Bochner's usual 'Neil Campbell' character whilst the latter is away in the UK giving evidence in a trial.

So that I don't repeat myself too much, I've already updated the Pilot locations with a tag that also identifies them as locations for this episode, so the locations I'll include here are the ones that weren't in the pilot. In this case it is footage of Rod Taylor driving his car up the access ramp into the Police Station compound from Hollywood Road and then circling the central car park.

This exact same sequence was reused for the very last episode, The Runaway, a well.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Pottinger Street, Central

The first shot following the opening credits of episode 4, Freebooter, is a glimpse up Pottinger Street from Queen's Road Central. This same shot is used again in Double Jeopardy.(ep:18) and The Runaway (ep:26).
