Pedicab Driver - Sammo Hung (1989) - Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio, Taipa

I know that Malt Candy starts his journey with a shot of Rua Fernão Mendes Pinto, but the editor sneaks in a quick glimpse of the same road further to the east where it goes by the name of Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio. Regular readers should be able to recognise the location because it's shot from the Calçada do Carmo.

This is the set of steps that Yan follows the little girl up and helps her with her dog. We've been here before for China Cry and The Canton Godfather (aka Canton and the Lady Rose) but for those films the lane was just a cobbled slope. These days, as you can see below, steps have been installed.

China Cry - Julian Nickson (1990) - Calçada Do Carmo, Taipa

In a very brief scene we see the heavily pregnant main character walking home up a rather steep slope. This slope is the Calçada Do Carmo that connects the Carmel Church terrace with the Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio below.

These days it has been turned into a very picturesque stone staircase, but before redevelopment it was just a cobbled slope with steps only at the very top.

Miracles - Jackie Chan (1989) - Calçada Do Carmo, Taipa

Okay, so the staircase that connects Carmel Square to Rua Direita Carlos Eugénio is called Calçada Do Carmo. It's these steps that feature in the next part of the initial Miracles set piece as a gangster's car comes crashing down the steps and JC gets in on the action by rescuing its occupants and fighting off the bad guys.

Now, once again, JC's production team have made the place look a bit busier than normal as well as 'British' with the additional fake telephone box (which promptly gets shot to pieces). The slope has since been removed and now the lane is stepped.
