T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

So, now we know where the cinema was that Stan Shaw walks into. But how about the street scene shown just before he goes in? It's easy to think this was likely filmed outside the cinema featured in the establishing shot, but actually we have moved down to Tsim Sha Tsui. This shot was taken looking west along Peking Road. It's hard to see but just hidden at the back is the old lip-shaped neon sign for the Red Lips bar that was located on Lock Road. That's the road that can be seen on the right hand side. There are a couple of other signs that confirm the location but they are also a bit hard to see. It's worth noting that the traffic on this section of Peking Road now goes the other way (west).

Staying with T.N.T Jackson, Rodney also identified a location I hadn't put up a screencap for but was looking for anyway. He's a mindreader!

This is the movie theatre that Stan Shaw supposedly goes into. The establishing shot used the exterior marquee of the Hollywood Theatre, located on the corner of Soy Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South. So, actually right next to the previous post. I suspect, but can't confirm, that the cinema interior used in the film was actually one in the Philippines where much of this movie was shot. I say this because it looks far too big to have been a Hong Kong cinema and many of the extras appear to be Filipino rather than Chinese.

In what appears to be an informal convention in Hong Kong, the cinema's name is remembered by the building that replaced it - 'Hollywood Plaza'.

Right after the second screencap, Charlie (Stan Shaw) walks into the Hollywood Theatre on Sai Yeung Choi Street and Soy Street. The word "Soy" on the street sign attached to the exterior of the theatre is (barely) visible when the camera shows Charlie looking up at the billboard for the Shaw Brothers film 'The Golden Lotus'[金瓶雙艷].

IMDB does not list any filming dates, but 'The Golden Lotus' premiered in Hong Kong January 17 1974.

A big shout out to fellow location and old house nerd, Rodney, who identifed the next image for me as being on Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mongkok. Anyway, a big thanks to Rodney for the ID.

Here is Rodney's comment:

That was filmed in Mongkok...Sai Yeung Choi Street. 鳳如大茶樓 "Fung Yue Tea House" was located in the still-standing Wing Wah Building at No. 14-24. The restaurant space has been turned into Hollywood Shopping Centre.

As for the sign on the left, only the last word is visible, but it should have read 國際大酒樓 "International Restaurant". It was in the, likewise still-standing, Good Hope Building at 612-618 Nathan Road.

The sign that I found interesting is the horizontally mounted "江大飯店". Its first letter was obstructed, but it if it was 滬江, then the restaurant is still in 'bidness', as Jock and J.R. Ewing would say.

I have been to the current 滬江 in a basement shop on Peking Road across from iSquare. As far as I know, it has always been there, though the address reads 27-33 Nathan Road with the sole entrance on Peking Road. Earlier Google streetviews showed a different sign that still read 滬江大飯店 and noted it had been in bidness since 1984, but the current sign does not have the "大". Perhaps it was opened before 1984 and in a different location[?].

T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - The Repulse Bay Hotel, Repulse Bay

This is the last post from T.N.T Jackson for a while because I still have a couple of shots I need to figure out. For the most part, there were some other locations that were obviously not in Hong Kong and I can only assume these were shot in the Philippines (actually, I found one place was a Buddhist temple located in a place called Caloocan in Metropolitan Manila).

Anyway, here is a brief view of the Repulse Bay Hotel as one of the characters (an undercover CIA agent) goes there for a clandestine meeting. The close ups of the meeting were most likely filmed in the Philippines though.

Incidentally, Glenn Griffith, the great mind behind A Pessimist is Never Disappointed, pointed me to one of his old posts about a documentary on these 1970s female Blaxploitation films. In case you are interested, you can also read about when Glenn first moved to Hong Kong back in 2012 and I took him for lunch in Taipo. I'm a bit sad reading that post now because Glenn's very last picture is of the famous roast meat restaurant, Yat Lok, which closed down just a couple of weeks ago (it was my go-to eatery whenever I was back there).

T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - Tsz Wan Shan, Kowloon

The location of T.N.T's dodgy meet up turns out to be somewhere near Tsz Wan Shan, or at least that is where one of the quick shots takes us as the taxi heads up Shatin Pass Road towards the shanty town that was replaced by the Shatin Pass Estate. The only problem is that the original Shatin Pass Estate was already built by 1973/4 so I am beginning to think this may in fact be some stock footage or perhaps older footage re-purposed for this film.

Looking at the images below, the most prominent feature is the modern looking (rather incongruous) building on the hillside. This is the Tsz Wan Shan police station and is still there - albeit now dwarfed by the surrounding development. Just to the left is a slope that marks the back end of the local service reservoir and we should be able to see the Shatin Pass Estate at the top of this slope. So either this footage was filmed pre-1967, or the original Shatin Pass Estate was tiny, or the dates given by Wikipedia about when it was built are wrong.

If anyone has any other ideas about why I can't see the estate, feel free to leave a comment.

T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - Kowloon Tong, Kowloon

After her rendezvous in the dodgy location where she was attacked and got to show off her (admittedly, very naff) kung fu skills, T.N.T gets a lift out of harms way by a passing motorist. The next couple of forward facing in-car shots were filmed just down the road from me along Suffolk Road (top picture) and then Waterloo Road. The rear facing in-car shots (close ups of the two actresses) were shot in the Philippines and not Hong Kong. 

The Nissen huts at the end of the Suffolk Road in the top picture belonged to Osborn Barracks on the other side of Waterloo Road. The hill in the background is the Kowloon Tsai Park hillock that used to host the famous Kai Tak checkerboards. In fact, despite the poor image quality, you can just make up the west facing checkerboard on the immediate left of the driver's head at the top of the slope.

At the end of Suffolk Road, the car turns left onto Waterloo Road in its pre-flyover days. Without the flyover we have a clear view up the road to the white telephone exchange building on the corner of Junction Road, and behind it is the main block of the Baptist Hospital. The block of flats on the left side of the road in the distance is Pine Tree Gardens and its still marks the corner with Cornwall Street opposite the hospital. In the distance on the hill side is Lung Cheung Court on Broadcast Drive. All these buildings mentioned are still around.

There's also another brief glimpse of Suffolk Road a bit later as Charlie (Stan Shaw) goes to see Elaine, who lives there. You can see the former military ground that occupied the space between Suffolk Road and Norfolk Road (Nissen hut in the background). The hill in the far background was removed in the 1990s to make way for Festival Walk. 

T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - Wanchai Interchange, Hong Kong

After leaving the airport, T.N.T asks to be taken to some dodgy area that the taxi driver is scared of going to. This involves crossing the harbour and driving past the (now demolished) Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay.

T.N.T Jackson - Jeanne Bell (1974) - Kai Tak Airport, Kowloon

Next up is this low-budget blaxploitation film that came hot on the heels of the post-Enter the Dragon kungfu bandwagon in the mid-70s. It stars Jeanne Bell as a kung-fu kicking special agent (called T.N.T - still haven't worked out why though) for the US Govt tracking drug runners in the far east. The film is supposedly set in its entirety in Hong Kong (well, apart from the finale) but there is actually very little to look at in terms of HK and most of the action takes place either in a studio or what appears to be a few areas around Manila in the Philippines.

The opening shot for the film is at street level and I'm still working on an identification for it, but in the meantime here is T.N.T arriving on a plane at Kai Tak.
