Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Hennessy Road, Wanchai

One of the locations of the ATMs where Alex and Kira go on their massive withdrawal spree is a now defunct branch of Hang Seng Bank at 200 Hennessy Road.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Central Ferry Piers

Here's some nice night time shots of the Central Ferry Piers area. They're just filler shots that serve no purpose other than to show off a bit of Hong Kong scenery. Note what looks to be Xmas light decorations which gives a small hint as to around the time of year the film was shot.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Lok On Pai Desalination Plant

It's been a while since we were out this way but the location where the trio go to meet the elusive "Zed" is the old desalination plant at Lok On Pai.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Yau Ma Tei Police Station

Another popular filming location is this colonial-era police station on Canton Road in Yau Ma Tei. It's been included in a variety of posts on this blog over the years (see here), and in this film it is where Alex and Sye get put in a cell following their arrest after the fight at the nightclub. More recently the building has been decommissioned and I'm not sure what it is currently being used for.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Chuk On Lane, Central

Leading off Wellington Street directly opposite the Yung Kee Building is a small lane called Chuk On Lane. This is where they run next after almost getting caught at the jewellery store. Believe it or not GoogleMaps has made someone walk down here with a camera to capture it. The lane connects Wellington Street with Stanley Street.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Wellington Street, Central

The trio are nearly caught when they attempt to use one of their fake credit cards at a jewellery store on Wellington Street, but they notice the fraud alert on the screen just in time and do a runner. This shop was a real business located in the Lucky Building on Wellington Street.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Wooloomooloo, Wanchai

I now believe the previous view of Happy Valley (see here) was taken from the 31/F open terrace area of Wolloomooloo because low-and-behold there is a later scene where Sye (Daniel Eric Gold) is seen doing some sort of deal with some local criminals on the terrace with its impressive views.

This isn't the first time the restaurant has been used for a film/TV shoot as long time readers may remember it featured on the UK TV serial Strangers back in 2018, although obviously this film was made first.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Queen's Road Central, Central

The trio go on a massive fraudulent spending spree, so the next scene shows them buying stuff at the various jewellery shops and luxury item stores along Queen's Road Central.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Cornell Centre, Chai Wan

The group rent a space in an industrial building from where they can run their credit fraud schemes. It looks like the film company rented space in the same building where Crossing Hennessy did a few years before, although it looks like in this film they used a lower floor.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Harbour Grand Hotel, Hung Hom

The trio finally arrive at their hotel, which turns out to be the Harbour Grand in Kowloon. This is not the first time this hotel has been used in a movie, and coincidentally was seen in another "hacker" movie released the same year, Snowden. In that film though it is pretending to be the Mira Hotel. The group rent the Presindetial Suite and I do believe it is the actual suite that you can see in the film so I have included those images below as well.

The bottom double screen shot is from the later sequence when Alex and Kira go on an ATM withdrawal spree. I think it is supposed to show Kira going to an ATM but it was obviously filmed in the front courtyard of the hotel.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - View of Happy Valley

Just before the trio arrive at their hotel we are treated to a nice view across Causeway Bay and Happy Valley. The camera looks to have been located at or near the top of "The Hennessy" at 256 Hennessy Road.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Harcourt Road, Central

More taxi-based shots as it heads west along Harcourt Road near Admiralty Station. The taxi is passing under the pedestrian bridge that links the Admiralty Centre with Tamar Park/Central Government Office complex.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Lockhart Road, Wanchai

One of the places we see from the taxi as the group are driven to their hotel is a quick glimpse down Lockhart Road from the vantage point of the Canal Road Flyover.

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Ting Kau Bridge, Tsing Yi

On their way from the airport to town, the trio's taxi takes them across the Ting Kau Bridge. Although in true HK Taxi driver style, it looks like he is taking them the long way around by driving north over the bridge towards Tsuen Wan area. You can see Tsing Yi and the Tsing Ma Bridge in the background. However, in the second image, the taxi is heading back the other way, so maybe they cottoned on to his overcharging shenanigans?

Hacker - Callan McAuliffe (2016) - Hong Kong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok

Next up is a foreign production for a change. It stars Callan McAuliffe as Alex, a computer hacker who teams up with a couple of other people to get rich by internet fraud and who catch the attention of a criminal mastermind who involves them in a plot to crash the US stock market so that they can reap the rewards when the market rebounds. Hmm, for some reason that sounds especially believable this week following what Trump has just done with the Global Tariffs (as I write in April 2025). The release date was 2016 but it looks like it may have been filmed a couple of years earlier.

Watch the film here (until it gets taken down).

The Hong Kong section of the film starts with the trio arriving at Hong Kong International Airport.
