Erotic Journey: Love Affair in Hong Kong - Hirokazu Inoue (1973) - Cross Harbour Tunnel

The opening credits roll over some in-car scenes as it drives out of the Island-side entrance to the Cross Harbour Tunnel.

Hong Kong 73 - Yueh Hua (1974) - Cross Harbour Tunnel Road

The group of friends decide to go to Stanley for the day, only to have to turn back due to congestion. This image is interesting because it shows the beginning of the construction work that would become Hung Hom Station. The ramp on the right is the ramp that connects Hong Chong Road with the podium/bus terminus area of the current station. So this 1973/74 image fits nicely with the 1975 opening of the new station. The camera is located on a pedestrian bridge. The bridge is still there but has been heavily developed since then. It's the one that connects the station to the PolyU site.

Bullet for Hire - Simon Yam (1991) - Cross Harbour Tunnel, Kowloon

There are currently three harbour tunnels in Hong Kong but only one gets to use the name "Cross Harbour Tunnel" (the other two are always qualified with either "Eastern" or "Western"). This is where the motorcade next heads as the vehicles head over to Hong Kong Island.

La Fine Dell'innocenza - Annie Belle (1976) - Cross Harbour Tunnel

Cheng takes Annie to an illegal gambling place where the forfeit of losing a bet is that Annie must sleep with the winner. The problem is he's a huge grotesque giant of a man with missing teeth, so she does a runner out of the door sans clothing and the pair escape on the motorcycle with Annie on the back in her birthday suit. The pair ride the motorcycle through the cross harbour tunnel.

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong - Jamie Chung (2015) - Cross Harbour Tunnel Entrance, Kowloon

I guess this is the way that the film maker wants us to know that the action is moving back across the harbour because we get this rather excellent view of the tunnel entrance. This was obviously shot from the pedestrian footbridge that joins Hung Hom Station with East TST.

Powaqqatsi - Godfrey Reggio (1988) - Cross Harbour Tunnel, Hong Kong

I'm interrupting the black and white transmission for a little spot of colour before getting back into the 1960 Hong Kong series.

The film I am interrupting it with is a bit of a weird one in that it's a documentary with no commentary other than a rather cool Philip Glass soundtrack. I think I first heard about Powaqqatsi via a comment when this locations blog was first set up. It really slipped my mind until recently when I went on another seek and find and managed to locate an old copy in one of the used DVD stores in Mongkok. Anyway, for those that don't know it is a sort of music and film compilation that takes us through various places in the world . The cinematography is absolutely stunning and luckily there are several sequences that were shot in Hong Kong. I think I captured them all but I may have missed some because of the way the filming was done. So if anyone is familiar with the film and recognises a snippet that has been bypassed, please feel free to let me know.

Anyway, the first scene I recognised - helped by the addition of the Hong Kong urban taxi in the frame) is the Cross Harbour Tunnel. This is the original tunnel, from Hung Hom to Causeway Bay, that was first opened in 1972.

Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon - Sonny Chiba (1977) - Victoria Park Road, Wanchai

Our first introduction to the local police detective, imaginatively called Smith in the English dub (played by Ga Lun - also credited as the co-director), is when he is called to investigate a murder down in Wanchai District. The road is now park of Victoria Park Drive and is right next to the Excelsior Hotel (rumoured to soon be redeveloped) and the HK-side entrance to the cross-harbour tunnel. Both can be seen in the background of these screengrabs.

A Queen's Ransom - George Lazenby (1976) - Cross Harbour Tunnel, Kowloon

Several shots were filmed from the walkway over the Hong Chong Road which leads down into the original Cross Harbour Tunnel. The walkway connects Hung Hom Station with what is now a vastly more expanded HK Polytechnic University. The new Hung Hom Station was on the Queen's itinerary for her 1975 trip and she did a plaque unveiling there on May 5th, however he trains didn't start using the new station until much later in the year. By the time this film was made it was already in full operation.

Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge - Nicholas Hammond (1979) - Cross Harbour Tunnel Entrance, Hong Kong

Journeying back to HK from the far reaches of the New Territories, and the kidnappers naturally use the cross harbour tunnel to make their way back to Aberdeen.

Shatter - Stuart Whitman (1974) - Cross Harbour Tunnel, East Tsim Sha Tsui

Here's one we haven't seen yet (unless you count the fake one from Double Impact), it's the original Cross Harbour Tunnel that joins Tsim Sha Tsui with Causeway Bay.

Once through the toll gates on the Kowloon side, we have a quick glimpse inside the tunnel before emerging into the daylight, Hong Kong-side.

It looked fairly bare on this side back in 1974, that patch of bare earth in the bottom snap now contains the Police Officer's Club. You can see the Excelsior Hotel in the background as well.

Yellowthread Street (TV Series) - Bruce Payne (1990) - Wanchai Aerial View

Another one of the series' cityscapes that shows off Hong Kong in all its glory. This time we have what can only be a helicoptered shot taken from above the streets of Wanchai District. The shots, which pans south, starts off over looking the HK Island-side of the cross harbour tunnel and continues across Causeway Bay area. On the first shot we can see causeway bay Typhoon shelter and the tunnel entrance below it. The flat land to the right of the shelter (in reality to the south) is Victoria Park.

 The flyover that snakes away through town is Canal Road West.
