Crossing Hennessy - Jacky Cheung (2010) - Cheung Hong Mansion, Fenwick Street

Loy's family run "Big D Trading", a white goods/home appliance store of a type that is very common in Hong Kong. It turns out Big D Trading is a real company and it appears they were amiable to letting the film crew use them for the story - no doubt for a small fee and some publicity. However, the company is located in Kowloon, so the exterior shots for the building where the shop is were done outside Cheung Hong Mansion on Fenwick Street.

Flight to Hong Kong - Rory Calhoun (1956) - International Funeral Parlour, Lockhart Road

I'm not sure if the funeral parlour was officially on Lockhart Road or Fenwick Street because it appears the main entrance was bang on the NW corner of the junction. I did add this screengrab to Gwulo a while back and some helpful comments have been added to the Gwulo page. The parlour was later replaced by the East Town Theatre and now the East Town Building. 
  

The film crew also shot some scenery of Lockhart Road as well by just turning the camera a little to the right at the junction. The view down Lockhart Road shows a section of the funeral parlour wall on the left before the columns of the tenements start. This was used for a back projected scene whereby Mama Lin (Soo Yong) reports someone following her to a traffic pagoda policeman (played by James Hong!).

Hard Boiled - Chow Yun Fat (1992) - Fenwick Street, Wanchai

Another venue sign before I get onto the real locations and this time it's the "Dragon Club". I'm not familiar with this place, but behind it is a familiar neon awning belonging to the An An Club which has cropped up a few times in the past (such as in Felicity and Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon). This means we are looking southbound along Fenwick Street and if you look at the Felicity images on the link above you can see that in 1978 the venue was called the "Winner Bar".

Anti-Corruption - Bill Lake (1975) - Hennessy Road, Wanchai

Another street level shot with a bar/cub sign that helps us place the location at the southern end of Fenwick Street where it joins Hennessy Road. The camera is on the south side of Hennessy Road and pans left to right. There's not much still around here other than the white building directly behind the buses on the right hand side in the second image. This building is still standing on the NE corner of the junction. At the time it was the "Hotel Singapore" but now it is the "Kew Green Hotel". This is the same building that was quarantined for a week in 2009 due to a Swine Flu outbreak with images of trapped guests waving out of the windows. It was the Wanchai Metropark at the time. The HK Govt sure seems to enjoy locking people up in hotel rooms (I'm speaking from experience after spending 3 weeks in one following my return from the UK).

Anti-Corruption - Bill Lake (197) - Lockhart Road, Wanchai

Some more street shots whilst the opening credit's preamble describes the state of corruption in the Hong kong police force at the time. The following is the view (looking east) along Lockhart Road between Arsenal and Fenwick Streets. The Pussycat Bar was located on the SW corner of Lockhart and Fenwick Streets where the Empire Hotel now stands.

Hong Kong (series) - Rod Taylor (1960) - Hennessy Road, Central

Not far from the last post I did for Hennessy Road, but this time driving in the opposite direction and we have this shot from The Turncoat from a scene when Taylor is driving Lisa Lu back to her hotel. The section of Hennessy Road we are looking at is just past the junction with Fenwick Street. In the lowest image you can just see a small section of the Methodist Church poking in on the extreme right. On the left of the same image you can just make out the (blurry) shape of the building that sat on the eastern corner of the junction and had a company called the "Yung Ziang Trading Company on the ground floor level. Gwulo has a proper image of the same building here. The distant ridge is Braemar Hill.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Neon Bar Signs, Various Locations

I'm a big fan of the neon signs that were once prevalent along Hong Kong's night streets, so here are quite a few from Felicity.

Pussy Cat Club was on the corner of Fenwick Street and Lockhart Road. Originally just occupying 34-38 LockHart Road, the club expanded to take over the corner plot as well (so, occupying 34-40 Lockhart Road) as can be seen from this grab from Felicity. This site is now the Empire Hotel.

We saw the Diamond Steakhouse sign quite recently as well, so you should now know it was on Lockhart Road on the other side of the Fenwick Street junction (in fact, in that link, you can see the arches of the Pussy Cat Club on the right of the third image).

Club Subway was at 53-55 Lockhart Road. I think that Subway occupied the basement of the same premises as Club Highway. It would make sense given the names of each. We last saw Club Highway during my Spearhead posts.

Staying on Fenwick Street for the next image and it's of the An An Topless Club and as you can see next door was Club Mikado. This little stretch of Fenwick Street was also seen on Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon.

Last but not least the last image is from a place that is a little more recent in Hong Kong history although it now appears to have disappeared for good. The Bottoms Up Club was on Hankow Road for many years (although for some reason in The Man with the Golden Gun it was moved to Hanoi Road - I am still not sure if this was in reality or just for the sake of the film. I suspect the latter). A few years ago the club moved over to Wanchai (coincidentally, to Fenwick Street) but now appears to have completely disappeared. Its original location, in the basement of a building that stood on the corner of Peking and Hankow Roads, was demolished circa 2014 and a new building, Prince Tower now stands in its place. This new building also has a basement and it's currently occupied by a Starbucks.

Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon - Sonny Chiba (1977) - Fenwick Street, Wanchai

A fair amount of action goes on around Fenwick Street. It's the location of the night club from where Golgo's crimelord-target runs his network. There are some nice shots showing the various neon signs for the clubs and topless bars that were once more prolific. The location can be identified by the fact that we can see the "Back Door Club" in the background. As previously discovered, this was located at 42-50 Lockhart Road - on the corner of Lockhart Road and Fenwick Street.

There is also this shot taken at the junction of Lockhart and Fenwick looking south. The columns in the picture belonged to a building that stood on where the Empire Hotel now stands.

Shirley's World (TV Series) - Shirley MacLaine (1972) - Neon Bar signs

In the Figuratively Speaking episode of Shirley's World, Shirley's assignment is to document the shenanigans of the US Sailors on shore leave in Hong Kong. Cue lots of nightclub neon signs, so here are a few of them that I have been able to track down. Once again, as with the I Spy neon montage, we did a while ago Doug Price's FLICKR album of bar cards have proved invaluable so many thanks to Doug for sharing.

Let's start with the Suzie Wong Bar and Niteclub and the Seven Seas Bar.

The Suzie Wong Bar and Niteclub was seems to have had two locations although they overlap. One location was 99 -103 Hennessy Road, and then it seems to have shifted over a block to 101 - 105 Hennessy Road. The Seven Seas Bar remains a mystery as to exact address, but Doug also has a photo of the same place in brighter light suggesting the Seven Seas Bar was next door. Feel free to comment if you know the exact address or why the Suzie Wong place seemed to shift over.

Next up is the Liberty Bar, 146-148 Lockhart Road. This later version is not to be confused with an earlier same name place that can be seen in this photo, but if you see Doug's bar card you'll notice the same guitar and cowboy boot emblem that can be seen in the neon sign below. It looks like the building this was in is still around and located next to the walkway that leads to Wanchai MTR station.

The Cave and the Round Up Bar- both were at 20 Luard Road - again another identification courtesy of Doug's bar cards. The Cave was in the basement and the Round Up Disco was on the first floor (in Hong Kong this could also mean the ground floor so I'm not sure which it was).

Next up is the Pussy Cat Bar. This just happens to be one of the first cards in Doug's collection and it gives an address of 34 - 38 Lockhart Road. But even better is also one of Doug's pictures taken in 1970 that shows the same neon signs during the daytime. It looks like that address is now filled up by the Empire Hotel.

Finally we have the Mikado Night Club and Bar. Again, Doug has a card, although we can't see an address on it he has added a comment saying it was at 3 - 7 Fenwick Street. This screenshot must be looking south because on the far left you can see partial signs for the Diamond Kitchen and Playboy Club which were near the junction with Hennessy Road.
