Weiße Fracht für Hongkong - Dietmar Schönherr (1963) - Nathan Road, Mongkok

A mystery location discovered by Thomas. This rather blurry neon shot from Weiße Fracht für Hongkong is along the Mongkok section of Nathan Road. He's right because there is an almost identical shot - but vastly clearer - on Gwulo showing more or less the same angle and neon signs. So, as we can see, the "otel" sign (top centre right) is actually part of the Sunya Hotel. This means we are looking south, probably from the junction with Argyle Street. Here's the film grab:

Heisser Hafen Hongkong - Horst Frank (1962) - Nelson Street, Mongkok

Another night shot showing off some local colour, literally. I don't know what the shop was but I do know it was situated on the corner of Nathan Road and Nelson Street in Mongkok. The first shot shows us looking from Nathan Road at the shop front with Nelson Street on the left, and the second picture shows the view from the pavement outside the same shop looking south down Nathan Road. In the background you can just make out the lights of the Sun Ya Hotel which was on the opposite side of the road. The address we are at is 636 Nathan Road and it now has a commercial building called the Bank Centre.

A Countess from Hong Kong - Sophia Loren (1967) - Sun Ya Hotel, Mongkok

A Countess from Hong Kong, starring Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren, only features a couple of short snippets of Hong Kong despite its title. The rest of the film is set on a cruise ship and was thus filmed entirely in the studio. Never mind, because we get a couple of decent locations including this one at what was 639 Nathan Road close to the junction with Argyle Street.

You can just make out the hotel name behind the string of lights on the lower left, but look closely at the background and you can also see the old neon sign for the Broadway Cinema that sat on the corner of Nathan and Argyle St. It was later replaced by the HSBC building that still stands there. It ceased operations in 1966 which means that this little bit of footage was possibly filmed just before its closure.

Kill a Dragon - Jack Palance (1967) - Nathan Road, Kowloon

On their way back from their boat trip to Aberdeen, the hotel guests are on a tour bus taking what must be the worlds longest detour, because they are actually travelling down Nathan Road (in Kowloon) on their way back to a hotel that was on HK Island.

How do we know it's Nathan Road? Well, one of the buildings we pass is the instantly recognisable Sun Ya Hotel. We've seen this place before on this blog courtesy of Golden Needles. It was located at 639 Nathan Road.

Golden Needles - Joe Don Baker (1974) - Nathan Road, Kowloon

Thanks to Thomas' confirmation of the fact that we can see the Sun Ya Hotel in the following screen capture, it means that this was filmed where currently stands the "One Grand Tower" at 639 Nathan Road. Between Shantung Street and Argyle Street in Mongkok. The One Grand Tower that now sits here pretty much fills up the whole block, so I'm not so sure what number the Sun Ya Hotel was positioned at (probably easy to check but can't muster the energy right now...). What I can say is that the current building was opened in 1986, so I can imagine the hotel was around in one form or another until the mid-80s. Streetview comparison underneath.

Actually, it looks as though this location was used twice but from two different angles. If you look on the top right of the first picture you can see the bottom of a sign with pink neon writing. Well, looking at the picture below, it would seem that the sign was somewhere on the opposite side of Nathan Road near to the junction with Shantung Street - around where the current Good Hope Building stands. I think therefore that the "President Silk Company Ltd", seen in the shots below, would have been opposite the Sun Ya Hotel in what is now the King Wah Centre. The King Wah Centre was built in 2001, so I have no idea what was there before.
