Red Dragon - Stewart Granger (1965) - Aberdeen, Hong Kong

One of the key scenes in this film involves an assassination attempt at the hands of a nefarious Aberdeen fisherman as Granger's character and sidekick are questioning a witness to the murder of the US spy. We start off with a shot of Granger walking down what appears to be Tung Sing Road with what appears to be the Tsung Man Building at the far background (beyond the red signboard).

This shot above shows Granger walking along the main road where it curves into the town. This is the old area (now a bus terminus) where the restaurant pontoons used to be before the waterfront was reclaimed. They head out onto the water to interview a rather younger looking Ho Li-yan before someone tries to off them with a dagger. You may remember this famous Chinese actor from an appearance on Shirley's World a few weeks ago.

Detonator II: Night Watch - Pierce Brosnan (1995) - Tung Sing Road, Aberdeen

When Mike Graham (Brosnan) follows the bald North Korean (Lim Kay-siu) he arrives at Tung Sing Street in Aberdeen and watches a murder take place in a nearby building after climbing some scaffolding. The exact location is the junction of Tung Sing Rd and Sai On Street. How do we know? It's because we can see the now defunct Golden Harbour Theatre in the background.

The cinema closed down (in 1996) not long after this was filmed and has since been turned into a restaurant, but the building is still around and hasn't changed much. Neither has the building opposite where the murder takes place. The lower picture (above) shows the view through the first floor window. The white writing has since gone but the signboard/surround it is on can still be seen on Streetview.

Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge - Nicholas Hammond (1979) - Aberdeen, Hong Kong

Various other shots in and around Aberdeen to make up this post. We start off with a decent aerial view of the western end of the harbour with a fair amount of empty space on the Hong Kong side of the water. The lower right looks like it is probably part of the former HK Electric power station that has since been replaced by South Horizons (soon to get its own MTR stop courtesy of the south island extension).

After Spidey takes his fall into the murky Aberdeen Harbour waters, he is rescued and carted off down Cheng Tu Road and into Ka Shing Mansion for his recovery. Ka Shing Mansion is still around but the building we see in the first picture has been replaced by Ping On House. In fact, it looks very much like we are witnessing the imminent demolition of the older building in the upper picture because of all the pavement protection that has been erected. Its replacement was built in 1978 which gives a more accurate reflection of the year the film was shot. Notice that the Tai Pak was sitting directly opposite out in the water.

We also catch a glimpse of the next road over, Tung Sing Road, and the thriving street market that it used to host. Actually, this isn't the first time we have seen this market because it made an appearance (at a higher definition) in Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold.

And we finish off with a shot on the harbour itself with the Tai Pak in the background. Sadly no sign of the Sea Palace in this film although I am sure it must have been around.

Some more of Aberdeen as brothers Melvin and Matthew head out to try and strike a drug deal (as undercover agents). The street is Tung Sing Road in Aberdeen town.

The clue to the location in this case is the presence of some still-standing buildings that can be seen in the top right background of the upper screen capture. The first one is the corner building with the iron window awnings. It's #24 Tung Sing Rd and stands on the corner with Sai On Street and can be seen centre screen of the Streetview grab below, still looking pretty much the same. The second building that can still be found is in the far background just to the left of the first building. It's the white facade of the Tsung Man Building at the far end of Tung Sing Rd where it joins with Tsung Man Street in front of the Govt primary school. Both buildings - Tsung Man and #24 Tung Sing - coincidentally, were built in the same year (1963).
