Karate from Shaolin Temple - Kazuma Kenji (1976) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

Wu pursues the boss man to the Yuen Yuen Institute where he and Musashi get into it as Musashi mistakenly tries to protect the boss from who he believes to be the bad guy. This is also the same place where Wu meets Musashi again later and the pair are seen by the gang, leading to Musashi's capture.

The place has changed a bit over the years but elements seen in the screen shots below are still around such as the small pagodas and the archway behind the actor in the second image. However, I don't think the yellow arch seen in the last two images is still around and believe it was replaced by the current larger ornamental gateway.

Rich and Famous - Chow Yun Fat (1987) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

The respected leader of the gang committe (or whatever he is) calls for a meeting between the two warring gangsters at the Yuen Yuen Institute in Tsuen Wan. A popular filming location for local and foreign movies alike (see here).

Bloodfight - Yasuaki Kurata (1989) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

A popular filming place, the Yuen Yuen Institute is where, after agreeing to become his student, Masa takes Ryu for some training and philosophical pep talks. 

Blade in Hong Kong - Terry Lester (1985) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

The luxurious home of Blade and his adopted father is protrayed by the Yuen Yuen Institute in Tsuen Wan. This has been used previously in one of the films I've covered in the blog- Vanishing Son.

Vanishing Son 2 - Russell Wong (1994) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

Vanishing Son 2 picks up where the last film left off and this time treats Wong's character as some sort of wandering Bruce Banner type character (I'm talking of the Bill Bixby days) who doesn't go looking for trouble but is ready to step up when it appears. 99% of this film is set and filmed in the US, but there is a single flashback scene filmed at one of the first film's Hong Kong locations - the Yuen Yuen Institute. It looks as though all four films in this TV movie series were filmed back-to-back.

Vanishing Son - Russell Wong (1994) - Yuen Yuen Institute, Tsuen Wan

The second Hong Kong location seen in Vanishing Son is the Yuen Yuen Institute located up in the hills above Tsuen Wan. This is the locations of Russell Wong's kung fu school run by his formidable master in the form of John Cheung. Cheung you may or may nor remember played Johnny Sun in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story as well as serving as the film's fight choreographer.

Here's a couple of shots from my visit there a few years ago when I seem to have inadvertently taken pictures almost matching the same angles of a couple of the screen shots above! Don't forget that Chiu Chi-ling was also filmed there many years ago performing some Hung gar forms.

Hung Gar Kung Fu - The Tiger Crane Form starring Chiu Chi Ling

A while ago I was asked by a friend (who is into kung fu in a big way) to identify the location used in the short film embedded below.

I'm not sure when it was filmed - possibly the late 70's or early 80's given that it's star - Chiu Chi Ling - looks fairly youthful still (though that could just be because of his hard Hung Gar practice bestowing healthy benefits...). But anyway it was filmed in Tsuen Wan at the Yuen Yuen Institute.I went there the other day and it looks exactly like it did when this film was made.
