All About Ah Long - Chow Yun Fat (1989) - Bonham Road, Sai Ying Pun

During the opening credits as Ah Long takes Porky to school there is a shot of the pair as they ride along Bonham Road. In the background you can see the main entrance of King's College at the top of Western Street.

Cracker: White Ghost - Robbie Coltrane (1996) - Hong Kong University, Pok Fu Lam

The purpose of Fitz's trip to Hong Kong is to take part in a lecture at the University and so one of the initial scenes we see (after the usual HK-wide establishing shots) is a brief glimpse of HKU's main building and surrounding area.

The angle makes me think this was probably taken from a nearby rooftop and there are several residential buildings that could have been used. I tried to do a picture stitch but the software didn't like the residential buildings on the left and missed them out.

Knock Off - Jean Claude Van Damme (1997) - Centre Street, Sai Ying Pun

Here's another missed post, this time from the rickshaw race, however this was deliberate because I was having a hard time matching it to anywhere. In the end my mistrust of movie geography has been my downfall because it turns out that this is the upper end of Centre Street in Sai Ying Pun and is pretty much where the race continues after the nifty turn at the bottom of St Stephen's Lane.

The reason why I was having a hard time matching it is because this part of Centre Street - between Bonham Road and Third Street - has been completely renovated to incorporate an escalator - stage 1 of a system that will rival the existing mid-level's escalator in Central. As far as I can tell (though the final verdict may well have to wait until a personal visit can be made) those steps that gave the street quite a bit of character have all gone.

If you ask me it's a really big shame and just I feel that streets like these should be protected as much as old buildings, but that's just me.

Knock Off - Jean Claude Van Damme (1997) - St Stephen's Lane, Mid-levels

Continuing the rickshaw race and the runners turn somehow manage to get from Eastern Street onto St Stephen's Lane, a small lane that sits on a terrace next to Bonham Road. Van Damme (or more accurately, his long-time stunt-double Todd Senofonte) runs down the lane and then does a quick kick off the steps to change direction, sending a competitor crashing into the railings at the bottom of the lane where it meets Babington Path.

Chinese Box - Jeremy Irons (1997) - King's College, Western Street

The official address of King's College is actually Bonham Road, however our view courtesy of the film is of the large double door entrance at the end of the complex along Western Street. The arched doorway at the back is one of several that overlook the inner sports ground.

Here's a Streetview grab of the same door, it looks like it has had a new frame fitted but other than that not much has changed.

The school is one of HK's oldest and most prestigious and has several noted alumni including Stanley Kwan - the creator of HK's famous Hang Seng Index - and the tosspot who masquerades as Hong Kong's current Chief Executive, Leung Chung D7689 (or something like that...).
