Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Tai Shek Hau Tin Hau Temple, Cheung Chau

We shall exit Felicity, so to speak, with a quick trip back to Cheung Chau. This scene occurs after Felicity is reunited with her boyfriend (after he has had an accident during his sailing trip) and they go and sit on a waterfront somewhere to have a chat. Note the temple in the background because this was a real pain to find.

It turns out that this is the Tai Shek Hau Tin Hau Temple at the southern end of Cheung Chau's western coast. The reason it took me so long to find is that Cheung Chau, like the rest of the territory, has also undergone a fair bit of reclamation and this former waterfront location is now approximately 100 metres inland with Chung Hing Street running along the front. Here's how far away from the water it is now.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Cheung Sha Wan Beach, Lantau Island

In the last part of the film, Felicity is reunited with her beau on a deserted beach somewhere. Part of this scene was filmed in Hong Kong and I can only assume the shots involving the small brown hut he is staying in were shot back in Australia because the background terrain is too flat to be Hong Kong. So the first two images below show the Cheung Sha beach shot portion and the latter image shows what I am guessing is somewhere in Australia - the fact that the two of them go frolicking butt naked in the sea may have been the reason these later shots were done outside of Hong Kong (nudity is not allowed on Hong Kong beaches).

Above: Cheung Sha beach with Sha Tsui in the background
Not Hong Kong (most likely Australia given the origin of the film)

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Tai Ping Shan Street, Sheung Wan

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure about this place but it is the only one that makes any sense. My problem is that the area has changed so much that it is impossible for me to confirm categorically one way or another. Anyway, it's a scene when Felicity and her friend (played by Joni Flynn) head to a temple. The Chinese writing we can see in the clips is the same script (and style) that can be seen at the Pak Shing Temple on Tai Ping Shan Street.

I *think* the large characters on the first image say 勝地 (reading R-L), which basically just means it is a famous place/scenic spot. If this is the case then I think it adds to my belief that this is the temple on Tai Ping Shan Street, or at least a former version of it. However, I am hoping Chinese readers will be able to confirm.

At the top of the second image is the words (also read from R-L) 濟公聖佛. This appears to be one of the set of characters that still appears on the Pak Shing Temple exterior and I can only assume that it refers to one of the shrines within the temple dedicated to 濟公 - a Song Dynasty monk - but I can't be sure.

Anyway, it's quite obvious that the building we see below looks nothing like the current structure that was supposedly built in 1851. However, its seems too coincidental to me that these images share the same Chinese signage as the current Kwong Fuk Ancestral hall. So I will put this one up and hope somebody is able to confirm one way or another and fill in the gaps in details.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Kellet Island Jetties, Causeway Bay

Felicity bids farewell to her new found love who has decided to go off on a jaunt around the oceans. The seeing off point is the wooden boardwalk on the eastern side of Kellet Island. Note the R.H.K.Y.C sign behind her on the wall.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Pak Sha Road, Causeway Bay

Staying in Causeway Bay for this next brief scene and it is a shot of the two actors walking down Pak Sha Road. It's seen a fair bit of redevelopment but at the last pass of the Google car the Tai Ping Koon restaurant was still there.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Sunning House, Causeway Bay

The building where Felicity's new boyfriend is staying was Sunning House on Hysan Avenue. Unfortunately the building was knocked down very soon after the movie was shot so it has been a real pain trying to find the location. The only clue was the partial signage on the building's roof on the lower image below. The Sunning House building was demolished to make way for Sunning Plaza which itself was demolished just a few years ago. It was still a building site the last time I was here a few years ago but I believe "Lee Gardens Three" now sits on the site. Sunning House had a hotel inside and you can read some information about it over on Gwulo.com.

IDJ, one of Gwulo's regular contributors, has been able to confirm that this view is along Hysan Avenue and not Sunning Road as I had originally guessed. Anyway, many thanks to him for the information.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - The Peak Tram, Hong Kong

There is a very brief scene in Felicity with the girls walking down the side of the Peak Tramway at, what looks to be, the May Road station.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - View from Stubbs Road Lookout, Wanchai

Here's a view that has been seen quite a few times on this blog, although what is visible has changed rather a lot over the years. It's the vista from the Stubbs Road Lookout. This was 1978 though and the Hopewell centre, although apparently underway, had yet to be built high enough to appear in the view (it was completed in 1980).

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - The Hoover Theatre, Causeway Bay

I mentioned in a previous post about advert displaying Let's Make a Dirty Movie at the Hoover, Majestic and Prince cinemas. Well, later on (or perhaps earlier, I can't remember) there is a brief glimpse of the Hoover Theatre (to give it its proper English name) with that movie being advertised on the exterior hoarding. Before it was demolished in 1981, the cinema used to stand on the corner of Yee Wo Street and Pennington Street where Paliburg Plaza now stands.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - The Wan Fu

Following on from a really interesting discussion over on Gwulo a few months back, Stephen Davies (the former head of the HK Maritime Museum) gave a very detailed background to the vessel that became the Hongkong Hilton Hotel's company pleasure craft. I'm quite pleased to see that Stephen had referenced my Wan Fu sightings from the various films on the blog, so, this is another that can be added to its growing list of cameo roles. Check out the same thread on Gwulo to find out where this vessel finally ended up.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Wanchai Ferry Pier, Wanchai

This one is up for debate but I will stick my neck out and say that I think this is the old Star Ferry pier at Wanchai. It's closed now and a new one located in front of the new reclamation has taken its place, so it's a bit difficult to know for sure, but the position of Beacon Hill and Lion Rock in the distance on the third image seems to tally with the old Wanchai location. Check out the Cat 3 worthy advert in the background. Let's Make a Dirty Movie was a French comedy (French title: Attention les yeux!)
from 1976 that looks as though it wasn't released in Hong Kong until 1978. There is a later still in this film of the front of the Hoover Theatre that shows that it was indeed showing at the time.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Great George Street, Causeway Bay

Another lost venue that was extremely popular in the day was he Pearl and Jade cinemas along Great George Street. Actually, the building they were in is still there and hasn't changed too much, it's the Pearl City Mansion building on the corner of Paterson Street. Those steps in the last image are still pretty much as they were.

Being part of the Shaw circuit, it's not surprise to see Brave Archer Part 2 being shown. According to wiki it was released on the 13th May 1978.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Aberdeen Harbour, Aberdeen

Aberdeen features several times throughout the film. From a walk along the waterfront during the day to a boat ride later and eventually dinner out at the Jumbo. The images below are from all three of these occasions.

Walking along the praya
Boat ride past the Sea Palace
Finally, a night out on the Jumbo (with bonus shot of the Tai Pak)

And just when you think it can't get any better, here is a parting shot of the old power station on Ap Lei Chau.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang

We get to go for a ride on Ocean Park's cable car. It had only been open for a year when this was filmed. I haven't been for years (I went once when the new aquarium opened but had such a hard time trying to see through its tiny viewing windows past the heads of about a hundred jostling Mainlanders that I've never been back) so can't comment how much it has changed but I reckon the cable car hasn't changed at all.

Felicity - Glory Annen (1978) - Tiger Balm Gardens, Tai Hang

Felicity and her new boyfriend head off for a trip to Tiger Balm Gardens. Sadly, it's not the showcase I was hoping for and we just get a rather nice shot looking up at Tiger Pagoda as well as part of the mansion but not much else.
