Meteor - Sean Connery (1979) - Hollywood Road, Central

The last post from this film, this time not too far from a previous shot on Pottinger Street. As the mass is running away from the wave along Hollywood Road at the junction with Lyndhurst Terrace, it suddenly appears at the top and sweeps down the road. The curve here has changed much even though much of Lyndhurst Terrace seems to have been redeveloped.

Foxbat - Henry Silva (1977) - Hollywood Road, Central

There are quite a few scenes in the car chase that I just can't quite place at the moment, but this one wasn't too hard to find. It's the section of Hollywood Road where in joins with Lyndhurst Terrace.

It looks fairly drab compared to the modern Streetview shot but is identifiable by the old shophouse at the back that is still around on the corner of Peel Street. I seem to remember the famous drink shop on the ground floor was faced with eviction a few years back because the landlord wanted to do the typical landlord thing and jack up the rent by 500%,but I think common sense reigned in the end. I haven't been this way for a while but I think it's still there.

Hong Kong 97 - Robert Patrick (1994) - Lyndhurst Terrace, Central

The tiled pillars in the background here are the ones that hold up the Mid-levels escalator where it crosses Lyndhurst Terrace at the junction with Cochrane/Gage Streets. Nothing seems to have changed much here other than the usual cycle of opening and closing of various establishments but those of who who have read my Chinese Box posts will know that one of the old blocks at the corner of Cochrane St (i.e. this spot) has since been replaced.

Revenge of the Pink Panther - Peter Sellers (1978) - Pottinger Street, Central

After crashing down Aberdeen Street and failing to make the turn onto Hollywood Road, Kato - astride the Dairy Farm motorcycle - somehow finds himself charging out of control down the slab steps of Pottinger Street which is actually a little further along Hollywood Road than the film would let you believe.

By pure luck he manages to catch up with the car at the bottom where Pottinger Street meets Wellington Street before continuing on down Wellington Street. You can see the red brickwork of the Central Police Station on Hollywood Road at the top of Pottinger Street.

The Streetview picture below shows same acute junction where Lyndhurst Terrace leads off to the left and Wellington Street continues on down the hill. Same same but different.

Chinese Box - Jeremy Irons (1997) - Cochrane Street, Central

Yes, Cochrane Street again but this time from the street level and including an old friend of this blog, Chaplin Chang.

Chaplin, as you will remember, has been cropping up in the films on here for quite some time - his earliest appearance being for 1959's Ferry to Hong Kong. By virtue of Chaplin's excellent English skills and general kind nature, he seems to have been the favourite man for foreign companies to go to for any kind of local liaison. As such became involved in many of the productions featured on this blog both in front and behind the scenes (and more often than not, both). Anyway, here he is again playing a down and out who seems to live at the entrance to Jeremy Irons flat and spends all day crushing cans.

The Dark Knight - Christian Bale (2008) - Midlevels Escalator, Lyndhurst Terrace

This is another scene that made big news in the local papers, however, for some unknown reason The HK Standard now limits its archive to the previous 4 years (previously we could browse articles from about 1994 onward) and so I can't link to anything useful anymore.

Never mind, this following scene filmed on the section of the Midlevel's escalator was actually done with several thousand people all gathered around the road below taking snap shots of the two stars Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman.

The road below them is Lyndhurst Terrace and Gage Street. In fact, there is the odd amateur film on YouTube of Morgan Freeman doing a walkabout along part of Gage Street, but I'm not sure that was filmed or if it was it didn't seem to make the final cut.
